“Expert Tips to Defrost Your Car Quickly and Safely”

Date:

As temperatures drop and frost covers windshields, it can be a frustrating inconvenience. Rather than idling in your car for 15 minutes to warm it up, drivers often resort to scraping off ice or using de-icing sprays, which may not always be effective.

Driving with obscured visibility during rush hour can result in a hefty £1,000 fine and three penalty points. To ensure all drivers stay safe, experts from Lotus Car Rentals specializing in Icelandic and cold-weather conditions have shared valuable advice on preventing and removing ice from vehicles.

According to Alexander Haraldsson, CEO of Lotus Car Rentals and a cold driving expert, everyday household items like potatoes and onions can help stop frost from forming. Additionally, vinegar and even a sandwich bag can be useful in dealing with unexpected frost.

Haraldsson recommends a cost-effective method of preventing ice buildup by spraying a mixture of water and vinegar on the windshield. Vinegar’s lower freezing point prevents water from freezing on top of it, aiding in defrosting. Another tip to save time in the morning is parking your car facing east, allowing the rising sun to melt any ice on the windshield.

For a quick DIY de-icing spray, the expert suggests combining rubbing alcohol with a small amount of washing-up liquid. Alternatively, a mixture of vodka and water can also serve as an effective de-icer when sprayed on the car.

Taking inspiration from a popular TikTok hack, Haraldsson recommends rubbing a potato or onion on windows the night before to prevent them from freezing over completely. These vegetables have properties that help break down frost upon contact.

If your car is already frozen, a simple trick to speed up the defrosting process is to use warm water in a freezer or sandwich bag to melt the ice on the windshield and windows. This method prevents scratching or damage to the glass, but it’s crucial to use warm water rather than boiling to avoid causing cracks.

By implementing these expert tips, drivers can save time and ensure a clear and safe journey during frosty weather conditions.
