Statistics reveal that an average household may harbor approximately 40 spiders, a number that can more than double in older residences. Alarmingly, about 21% of the British population confess to having arachnophobia, as per a recent YouGov survey findings.
Expert landscaper Andy McLaughlin from RF Paving shares valuable insights on spider prevention, emphasizing the significance of initiating deterrent measures outdoors.
By creating an outdoor environment that is unattractive to spiders, devoid of hiding spots or nesting grounds, you can encourage them to seek shelter elsewhere.
One effective strategy is to make your outdoor paving inhospitable to spiders. Andy recommends utilizing a common household item, vinegar, as a spider deterrent for your garden paving maintenance.
According to Andy, “Vinegar serves not only as an economical kitchen staple but also as a potent patio cleaner. A solution of white vinegar and water can efficiently cleanse your patio slabs, with the acetic acid content in white vinegar proving particularly adept at eliminating moss from paving slabs.”
The pungent odor of vinegar is repugnant to spiders, deterring them from treated areas due to the presence of acetic acid, a compound that disrupts their sensory perception and causes discomfort.
Andy suggests, “Allow the vinegar solution to sit on the paving slabs for 30 to 60 minutes, then gently scrub the patio to ensure thorough coverage. The diluted mixture can also be sprayed in potential hiding spots like cracks, corners, and outdoor furniture.”
