Eurostar has revealed plans to introduce its first substantial fleet of double-decker trains in the UK. The company is set to acquire around 50 two-story trains for its network connecting London St Pancras with Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam via the Channel Tunnel.
The deal, valued at two billion euros (£1.7 billion), has been made with Alstom to manufacture the trains in France. The initial order is for 30 trains, with an option for an additional 20. The new fleet, named Eurostar Celestia, will offer 20% more seating capacity than the current single-deck trains, with a lower floor and increased height.
Despite not doubling the seating capacity due to interior space requirements for stairs, the new trains will be a significant addition to the existing fleet of 17 e320s. Eurostar plans to operate the double-deckers alongside the e320s and expand services to Frankfurt and Geneva in the near future.
The Eurostar Celestia trains are expected to be in service by January 2031, with commercial operations commencing in May of the same year. This move marks a milestone for the UK railway system, reintroducing double-decker trains after a long absence since the 1970s.
Eurostar’s commitment to enhancing passenger experience and meeting growing demand for international train travel is evident in this strategic investment. The company aims to increase passenger numbers significantly over the next few years, offering unique features like more legroom, designated spaces for bikes and wheelchair users, and surprise elements for passengers to enjoy.
Alstom’s CEO highlighted the focus on technology, energy efficiency, and passenger comfort in designing the new trains, aligning with the vision of sustainable and competitive European mobility. Eurostar plans to maintain and operate the fleet at its Temple Mills facility in London, anticipating competition from other firms for access to the facility.
As Eurostar embarks on this ambitious growth strategy, it faces new challenges and opportunities in the evolving landscape of cross-Channel transportation. With a strong emphasis on innovation and passenger-centric services, Eurostar aims to lead the way in providing efficient and enjoyable train travel experiences.
