These blankets contain insulated wires that generate heat when connected to power, providing a cost-effective alternative to central heating. Octopus customers facing financial difficulties can access free electric blankets through the Octo Assist program, a £40 million initiative aimed at assisting struggling customers.
To qualify for support, individuals must demonstrate challenges in paying energy bills or fall under vulnerable categories such as the elderly, households with young children, or those with specific health conditions. In addition to electric blankets, eligible recipients may receive grants to clear energy debts, flexible payment options, or payment breaks. Applications can be submitted online via the Octopus website.
OVO Energy is also extending support through its Extra Support Package, a £56 million program offering energy-saving products like electric blankets and smart sockets, along with potential home upgrades such as loft insulation and boiler replacements. Financially distressed households can benefit from payment plans and emergency credits. Interested individuals can apply on the OVO website.
Recent increases in energy bills have seen the Ofgem price cap rise from £1,720 to £1,755 for standard dual fuel households on direct debit payment. This price cap remains effective until December 31, subject to periodic updates. While the cap regulates the maximum charge for gas and electricity units, actual bills are calculated based on consumption levels.
The Ofgem price cap sets boundaries on energy unit charges and standing fees, which are fixed daily costs for energy network access. The cap represents the expected annual expenditure for an average household using 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas annually.
