“Dunsop Bridge: UK’s New Central Point & Charming Gem”

Date:

Dunsop Bridge, a charming village in Lancashire, has been officially designated as the most central point in the UK by Ordnance Survey. The precise center of the nation is located on a hillside just northwest of the village, near the Whitendale Hanging Stones. Dunsop Bridge, situated in the heart of the Forest of Bowland and approximately nine miles from Clitheroe, is the closest village to this exact midpoint.

While commonly believed to be the UK’s center due to a commemorative plaque on its village green, the actual central spot is a few miles northwest on a hillside above the village. Originally part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the picturesque village became part of Lancashire following boundary changes in 1974.

Not only known for its central location, Dunsop Bridge is also home to the 100,000th BT phone box, installed by explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes in 1992, according to Lancs Live. Positioned at the meeting point of the River Dunsop and the River Hodder, Dunsop Bridge attracts walkers, with popular routes like the Saddle Fell Top and Slaidburn Walk drawing nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers alike.

Much of the surrounding land is owned by the Duchy of Lancaster. In 2006, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited the village, exploring the area, visiting the Puddleducks Cafe, and observing a cow’s hoof trimming at Radholme Laund Farm. Their visit culminated in lunch at The Inn at Whitewell in honor of the Queen’s 80th birthday.

Renowned for its peaceful atmosphere and stunning moorland views, Dunsop Bridge serves as the gateway to the famous Trough of Bowland. The Forest of Bowland National Landscape praises the village’s “lovely winding paths” and its appeal as a perfect spot for picnics or a tranquil tea break, with ducks and lush banks enhancing the serene setting.

The Forest of Bowland National Landscape website highlights Dunsop Bridge as the starting point for the renowned Trough of Bowland, with scenic paths attracting numerous fell walkers. The village’s resident ducks and green banks make it an ideal stop for a picnic or to enjoy a cup of tea and cake at the cafe.

Whether for leisurely walks or simply appreciating the tranquility of the surroundings, Dunsop Bridge remains a cherished gem in the UK.
