“Duchess of Edinburgh Sheds Light on Rape in Congo”

Date:

The Duchess of Edinburgh embarked on a confidential journey abroad to engage in poignant discussions with women impacted by rape in conflict zones. During her discreet four-day visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo, she aimed to shed light on the oppressive use of rape as a weapon and extend support to survivors of harrowing wartime sexual violence.

Her itinerary included a visit to Beni in the troubled eastern region of the country, where she emotionally interacted with survivors. She attentively listened to a 16-year-old victim of police assault and another woman who recounted being sexually assaulted while escaping rebel-held territories. Additionally, she visited the Panzi Clinic in Kinshasa, observing a young girl undergoing surgery by Nobel laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege.

Reflecting on her experience, the Duchess expressed deep concern over the normalization of rape and stressed the importance of acknowledging the stories of survivors. She emphasized the necessity of immersing oneself in the environment and lives of those affected to truly comprehend the challenges they face.

Furthermore, she met with women who had survived sexual violence during an escape attempt at Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa. The Duchess also explored efforts to promote peace in the conflict-ridden Virunga National Park, where she learned about initiatives supporting eco-tourism, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture to protect the park’s biodiversity.

Her trip included engaging experiences such as participating in a jungle warfare training session with a Brazilian peacekeeping team, witnessing landmine detection demonstrations, and receiving gifts symbolizing the region’s culture. The Duchess expressed her commitment to returning to the Democratic Republic of Congo to advocate for conflict resolution and support ongoing peace efforts.

The eastern part of the country, known for its mineral wealth, has been plagued by prolonged conflict, leading to the displacement of millions. The Duchess’s visit emphasized the urgency of addressing the root causes of violence and supporting sustainable solutions for lasting peace in the region.
