Dolly Parton’s journey from humble beginnings to fame has inspired her music, a theme park, a podcast, and now a musical set to debut on Broadway later this year. Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the show promises to narrate Dolly’s unique life story in her own words and through the songs that have shaped her experiences.
In a video announcement about the musical’s Broadway arrival, the 80-year-old icon assured that all details shared in the production would be authentic. She emphasized that the show delves into her real roots, life experiences, losses, loves, and her path to success, rather than focusing solely on external glitz and glamour.
The musical is set to feature original songs created specifically for the production, along with some of Dolly Parton’s popular hits like “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.” Performances are scheduled to commence in New York City on December 7th this year, running until November 21, 2027.
Expressing her excitement, Dolly Parton mentioned that seeing the musical come to life is a lifelong dream. With a career spanning nearly seven decades, Parton, a prolific songwriter with over 3,000 compositions and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, is honored as an inductee in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The musical initially premiered in Nashville last summer at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, drawing sold-out crowds during its six-week run. Director Bartlett Sher shared his astonishment at the profound emotional connection audiences have with Dolly, highlighting the joy and inspiration she has brought to countless people over the years.
This production aims to showcase a side of Dolly Parton that has never been seen before, going beyond the glitz and glam to reveal her unfiltered, authentic story. Tickets for the show will be available to the public starting Friday, July 10th.
