“Deter Pigeons, Attract Native Birds to Your Garden”

Date:

Autumn offers a great chance to observe various wildlife in your garden, but many birds may be deterred by pigeons monopolizing bird feeders. Native species like robins, blackbirds, and blue tits stay in the UK year-round, needing to build up fat reserves for the cold winter.

Pigeons, larger than typical garden birds, often gather in groups to feed, intimidating smaller species. However, experts at Webbs Garden Centre suggest a simple way to keep pigeons away while attracting other birds – remove any dropped seeds from the area.

According to the Express, pigeons tend to feed on the ground and are less likely to fly up or perch high like other birds. They are drawn to fallen seeds around bird feeders. By promptly clearing up fallen seeds, you can prevent pigeons from becoming a nuisance in your garden.

Pigeons are known to forage early in the day, so clearing away dropped seeds in the late afternoon or evening can help deter them. For those who don’t mind feeding pigeons but want to give native birds a fair chance, setting up separate feeders can work. Place one feeder low to the ground with pigeon-friendly foods, and another higher up with seeds that pigeons are less fond of.

By taking steps to discourage pigeons, you can create a welcoming environment for smaller birds to thrive in your garden, allowing you to enjoy the company of robins, blackbirds, and other beloved species this autumn.
