A heartless daughter has been sentenced to prison for the neglect that led to the death of her vulnerable, disabled mother in squalid conditions.
Colleen Sayegh, 38, admitted to failing to provide proper care for her dependent mother and received a sentence ranging from 15 months to eight years behind bars earlier this month.
Authorities discovered Sayegh’s mother in a Pennsylvania residence on July 19, 2022, in a severely neglected state. The woman, who was in a wheelchair, was found unresponsive with multiple open wounds, extreme dehydration, and alarmingly low blood pressure. Tragically, she passed away two days after being found by the police.
Following an investigation, it was revealed that the mother, wheelchair-bound and weakened on her right side due to a previous stroke, had been left in deplorable conditions, surrounded by animal feces and a putrid smell within the residence.
Sayegh confessed that she had not bathed her mother for months, neglected to seek medical attention for over a year, and attempted to address the open wounds herself, causing her mother immense pain. An autopsy later revealed that the mother died from sepsis resulting from a skin infection likely originating from the unsanitary conditions she was living in.
During the sentencing, Sayegh claimed her mother refused treatment, but the judge rebuked her actions, stating that even animals are treated better. The judge criticized Sayegh for prioritizing her own needs over her mother’s well-being, calling her actions selfish and inexcusable.
While sentenced to 15 months to eight years in prison, many in the community have expressed outrage that the punishment was not harsher, with some individuals stating that Sayegh deserved a longer prison term for her heinous actions.
