Thousands of households have been encouraged to apply for a £100 grant available through the Household Support Fund to help with increasing living expenses. The fund is provided by local councils to assist low-income families with essential costs like food, energy, and water.
Different councils offer various forms of aid, such as vouchers or direct cash payments, depending on their policies. In York, over 2,000 eligible residents have yet to claim their one-time £100 grant this winter, which is automatically deposited into recipients’ bank accounts and does not require repayment.
Nearly 5,000 York residents qualify for the grant, with the council already sending out letters containing a web link and a unique reference number for online applications. To claim the grant, applicants must submit a recent bank statement displaying their personal details and bank information by the deadline of November 23, 2025.
Cllr Katie Lomas from City of York Council emphasized the importance of claiming the grant before the deadline, highlighting that the money, given by the Government, is a non-repayable grant that can alleviate financial burdens during the winter months.
For individuals outside York, it is advisable to inquire with local councils about available support through the Household Support Fund. For instance, Portsmouth City Council is granting £150 to single individuals and £200 to couples or families meeting certain income criteria.
To be eligible, recipients must be receiving specific benefits and have a household income below specified thresholds. It is crucial to ensure that eligible households receive the financial assistance they are entitled to, especially during challenging economic times.
