“Canada’s Flag Football Teams Advance to World Championship Quarterfinals”

Date:

Canada’s male and female flag football teams have progressed to the quarterfinals of the world championships held in Germany. The Canadian men were defeated 37-28 by Japan, finishing second in their group with a 2-1 record. Due to Nigeria’s withdrawal from the tournament because of visa issues, Canada was awarded an automatic win in their scheduled match against Nigeria. Japan’s quarterback, Take Taniguchi, threw five touchdown passes, while Canada’s former CFL quarterback, Michael O’Connor, threw three TD passes. In the quarterfinals, Canada will face American Samoa, who caused an upset by defeating the top-ranked U.S. team.

On the other hand, the Canadian women topped their group with a flawless 3-0 record after defeating Japan 34-20. They are set to play against Austria in the quarterfinals, with a potential semifinal match against the winner of Mexico and Spain. Quarterback Sara Parker shone with four touchdown passes against Japan, including two to Caroline Moquin-Joubert. Additionally, Alexane Fournier, Marianne Quirion, and Frederique Morneau contributed with touchdown receptions and a rushing touchdown to overturn a halftime deficit and secure a 21-point victory in the second half.

While the pursuit of a world title remains paramount, teams are also vying for a chance to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The top two finishers at the world championships will secure spots for the Olympics, marking the sport’s debut on the Olympic program. All matches of the event are available for live streaming on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem.
