“Bus Strike to Disrupt Manchester Services Over Pay Dispute”

Date:

A bus strike is set to impact one of the United Kingdom’s major cities starting tomorrow due to failed negotiations between unions and management. Approximately 1,000 employees at Metroline Manchester are planning to strike over pay concerns, with the walkout scheduled from tomorrow until Thursday. Unite the Union announced that workers at four Greater Manchester depots will participate in the strike, leading to significant service disruptions in the area.

The pay dispute affecting Stagecoach Manchester, First Bus Rochdale, and Metroline Manchester, the companies operating Bee Network services, has led to this industrial action. Workers argue that the current pay offers do not adequately address the long-standing issue of low wages. Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed the upcoming strike action.

In response, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham emphasized the importance of fair compensation for bus drivers and pledged full support during the strike. Metroline expressed disappointment over the strike and offered an improved pay raise of 8.8% over two years. While over 2,000 workers were initially expected to strike, actions by employees at two other Bee Network firms have been partially suspended following revised pay offers.

Unite regional officer Colin Hayden disclosed that negotiations resulted in revised pay offers for some workers, leading to the suspension of strike action at Stagecoach and First Bus Rochdale pending member votes. However, Metroline workers will proceed with the planned industrial action due to an unsatisfactory offer. If ballots yield specific outcomes, coordinated strikes involving all three companies could still occur on specified dates, potentially affecting bus services in Greater Manchester.

A Metroline spokesperson expressed disappointment in Unite’s decision to pursue strike action instead of allowing drivers to vote on the improved offer. The company highlighted that their proposal aligns with industry standards, exceeds inflation rates, and aims to ensure competitive wages for drivers. Metroline emphasized its dedication to resolving the issue and avoiding further disruptions to the community due to industrial action.
