“BT to Phase Out Copper Landlines, Urges Transition to Digital Voice”

Date:

BT has announced a crucial update regarding landline services, signaling a significant shift for users of this technology. The traditional copper cables, which have been the backbone of communication for over a century, are scheduled to be phased out within a year.

The deadline for this transition is set for January 31, 2027, compelling millions to migrate to new digital services that rely on internet connectivity for making calls to loved ones. According to BT, the move is necessary as the outdated copper infrastructure is overstressed, unreliable, and inadequate for modern connectivity demands.

The latest offering from BT, known as Digital Voice, promises a more reliable connection and enhanced features such as improved call quality, call forwarding to mobile devices, and better call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing. While over three million households in the UK have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many more are yet to transition.

BT has issued a call to action, emphasizing the importance of upgrading before the nationwide copper network shutdown. Customers are urged to seek support and not ignore communications from their provider to avoid disruptions in phone and broadband services.

The transition to digital landlines is straightforward for most users, with existing BT handsets often compatible. Retaining the same phone number and billing structure, users may only need to connect their current home phone to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket. For those facing difficulties, reaching out to the provider or scheduling an engineer visit may be necessary.

Customers with specific needs, such as telecare device users, are advised to notify their provider promptly to ensure appropriate support arrangements. It is crucial to verify if the switch to digital has been completed in time to prevent any service interruptions due to the retirement of the copper network.

BT Group Chief Executive Allison Kirkby emphasized the significance of enhancing the UK’s digital infrastructure to provide reliable connectivity for all. With substantial investments in infrastructure development, BT aims to foster growth and connectivity across homes, businesses, and communities through digital networks.
