“British Tourists Shun Ibiza Amid Overtourism Concerns”

Date:

According to Ibiza’s tourism minister, a significant number of British tourists opted out of visiting Ibiza this summer.

Last year, anti-overtourism protests took place in popular Spanish tourist spots as locals expressed discontent amidst a record-breaking year that saw Spain receive 94 million visitors in 2024. The Spanish Ministry of Tourism reported a 16.1% increase in international visitor spending in 2024, totaling €126.3 billion.

Despite the economic benefits, the strain posed by the influx of tourists on housing, infrastructure, and the local way of life has led to dissatisfaction among many residents. Consequently, a significant number joined protests last year to voice their concerns.

During the World Travel Market in London, Ibiza’s Tourism Minister, Jaume Bauza, acknowledged a decline of 20,000 British visitors to the Balearic island during the peak season compared to the previous year.

Nevertheless, tourism officials in Ibiza remain optimistic, noting a potential shift of British tourists to the shoulder season months of October and November, when the weather is milder and the risk of protests disrupting visits is lower. Flight capacity to the Balearics has increased by 8% this November compared to 2024 in anticipation of more off-peak travelers.

When asked about concerns regarding overtourism protests affecting travel decisions, Minister Bauza stated that while any drop in attendance from major markets like the UK is concerning, it has been offset by increased visitors from France, Switzerland, and Italy, similar to the previous season. He emphasized the importance of addressing declines from key markets while expressing respect for protests without being alarmed by them.

In response to the changing tourism landscape, Ibiza has been transitioning towards a more upscale and sustainable tourism model. Minister Bauza outlined plans to combat illegal holiday rentals and monitor the industry’s impact on the island’s environment.

Emphasizing the importance of visitor engagement, the tourism chief encouraged British tourists to participate in and understand the ongoing transformation process in Ibiza, focusing on quality over quantity and ensuring a positive experience for both visitors and residents.

Pedro Homar, managing director of the Palma Tourism Board, reported strong visitor numbers in Majorca’s capital city this summer, particularly from British tourists. He expressed a desire to continue attracting UK visitors to Palma and emphasized their warm welcome in the city.
