A British tourist who went missing during a hiking trip on the Greek island of Karpathos has been discovered deceased. The 55-year-old man disappeared over a month ago while traveling solo to the island for the first time. His body was located on Saturday in the remote region of Epionia in the northern part of Karpathos.
The last confirmed sighting of the man was when he was taking photos on his phone in the fishing village of Diafani back in June. According to a local witness, the tourist had sought directions to Vroukounda via the Lahamitis path.
Upon the man’s failure to return to his lodging as scheduled, emergency services were alerted. Firefighters, police, coast guard personnel, along with drones, search dogs, and volunteers extensively searched the area but found no trace of him.
The remains of the man will be transported to the nearby island of Rhodes for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. This incident follows the recent report by the Mirror on the death of another British visitor at a popular Greek holiday destination, where his body was recovered from the water.
The 57-year-old man passed away at Prasonisi, Rhodes, after being discovered in the waters around midday on Sunday, September 7. Officials mentioned that the British individual was unresponsive and lacked a pulse when he was brought ashore. Despite efforts by paramedics at the Gennadi Health Centre, he could not be revived and was later declared dead at the hospital.
The Lindos Port Authority is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, with an autopsy scheduled to determine the exact cause.
