The British Museum is set to implement new entry procedures later this month, doing away with traditional queues in favor of a free-for-all system, which has been humorously dubbed as “extremely un-British.” The changes will be in effect from September 17 to September 23.
Visitors approaching from Great Russell Street will still pass through the existing security tent but will no longer have to wait in line; instead, they will enter through a more casual crowd. Those with British Museum memberships will continue to have access to a fast-track lane at the security checkpoint.
A museum spokesperson stated that visitors will have the freedom to move around the area near the lawns. This trial of new entry procedures is part of the preparations for the upcoming Visitor Welcome Pavilions, aimed at enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Ian Visits, who first shared the news, jokingly remarked on the departure from traditional British queuing etiquette, humorously calling it “almost continental.” The museum’s long-term Masterplan includes the opening of new Visitor Welcome Pavilions in Spring 2026, with the goal of establishing the British Museum as the most inclusive and welcoming museum globally.
The current trial is a step towards replacing the temporary security sheds with a more permanent and architecturally fitting structure. These sheds have been in place since 2016. The new pavilions are being designed by Studio Weave, the architectural firm that won the competition held by the British Museum last year.
Upon announcing Studio Weave as the winner, Nicholas Cullinan, the museum’s director, praised the firm’s proposals for striking a balance between a thoughtful visitor experience and honoring the museum’s historic building. Collaboration with the London Borough of Camden and other stakeholders is underway to create a unique and special addition to the museum.
