An 11-year-old boy who had been confined to his room by his mother was rescued when authorities found him malnourished and covered in waste. Rachel Nicole Blaylock, 40, was apprehended by police in Baytown, Texas, following a welfare check on her child at their trailer home.
Upon entering the residence, officers were met with a pervasive stench of feces and a swarm of flies. The child, who is non-verbal and autistic, was discovered in a bedroom weighing a mere 46 pounds (20kg), with fecal matter on his body and nails.
Reports indicated that the boy had been confined to the room using a lockable screen door, preventing him from leaving while allowing Blaylock to monitor him. The room was described as unkempt, with a soiled mattress and fecal matter scattered around.
Blaylock was instructed by authorities to take her son to the hospital, but she allegedly refused, citing inconvenience and distrust of medical professionals. Subsequent medical evaluation revealed severe autism and significant dental decay due to neglect. Blaylock was arrested and charged with child injury, alongside a separate methamphetamine possession charge.
Allegations from the boy’s grandmother suggested a pattern of confinement, neglect, and lack of proper care by Blaylock. Child Protective Services had previously intervened, urging Blaylock to seek medical attention for the severely underweight child.
The average weight for an 11-year-old boy in the US is 79 pounds (35kg).
