British Gas has issued advice on safeguarding homes during the cold weather. The UK has experienced snow and icy conditions, prompting yellow or amber weather alerts for many areas. Temperatures have plunged below zero, reaching -6.1°C in Cumbria, -5.8°C in Wales, and -4.8°C in parts of Scotland.
The drop in temperatures can lead to issues indoors, particularly with pipes. Cold weather can cause pipes to freeze and potentially burst, resulting in leaks and flooding. Ensuring proper insulation for pipes is crucial to prevent such damage.
If you suspect a frozen pipe, listen for warning signs like gurgling noises from the central heating, lack of hot water, or clogged sinks. Identifying and thawing the frozen pipe, especially outdoor or exposed pipes, is essential to avoid further damage.
Burst pipes can be hard to detect but may manifest as water pressure problems, water marks, or damp patches. If a burst pipe is suspected, turn off the water supply, contact a plumber for repairs, and document any damage for insurance purposes.
The Met Office has issued weather warnings across various regions, including an amber alert for snow in Yorkshire. Residents are advised to prepare for disruptive wintry conditions with gusty winds and potential lightning strikes.
