A new security threat named Sturnus is now a concern for users of popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal on Android devices. This Trojan, first discovered by MTI Security researchers, allows hackers to remotely control infected devices, enabling them to access private messages, steal banking information, and even conduct unauthorized transactions by blacking out the screen.
Sturnus has the capability to bypass encrypted messaging services, posing a significant risk to user privacy. Although the threat is currently limited in its impact, there is a potential for widespread distribution if hackers find ways to proliferate it, leading to a significant security breach for millions of Android users.
According to Threat Fabric, the developers of Sturnus, this malware is highly sophisticated and poses a serious threat by enabling attackers to take complete control over compromised devices. It combines various malicious tactics such as credential theft, message monitoring, keylogging, screen streaming, remote control, and environmental monitoring, jeopardizing victims’ financial security and privacy.
To mitigate the risk of falling victim to Sturnus, users are advised to only download apps from the official Google Play Store, avoid sideloading software, and carefully review app ratings and reviews before installation.
While Sturnus is a newly identified threat, its advanced capabilities highlight the importance of taking precautions to protect personal data and devices from potential cyber attacks.
