“Beware as Mice Invade UK Homes in Autumn”

Date:

As the transition from summer to autumn brings cooler nights, people tend to spend more time indoors during the latter part of the year. This trend also applies to various creatures that move into our gardens and sometimes find their way into our homes. Mice are commonly spotted in the UK, darting around gardens, sheds, garages, greenhouses, and even inside houses, particularly at night.

Whether they are dormice or field mice, these rodents do not hibernate, causing them to be a nuisance year-round. Estimates suggest there are about 5.4 million house mice in the UK, with their numbers increasing during late summer and early autumn. The British Pest Control Association receives approximately 80,000 mouse-related callouts annually. In colder months, when food becomes scarce, mice may venture into homes through cracks or gaps in walls and floors.

According to Polytunnel Gardening, mice sightings are more common in autumn and winter, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance during this period. The website notes that wood mice and field mice can easily enter homes due to their small size but are more likely to seek shelter in garages, sheds, and outbuildings for easier access to the outdoors.

To deter mice from entering your property, you can use natural repellents that mice dislike due to their strong sense of smell. These scents, when spread around the garden, particularly in areas with food sources and potential nesting spots, can help keep mice at bay. It is important to only deter mice if they are causing issues in your garden or home, as they serve as a crucial food source for other wildlife such as foxes and owls.
