Automatic Enrollment Expands Free School Meals Access

Date:

Thousands of additional children will now receive free school meals to ensure they do not miss out on essential support. Families in Devon County Council and Torbay Council areas previously had to apply for free school meals, but now eligible children will automatically receive this assistance. This change means approximately 1,300 pupils who were entitled to free school meals but were not receiving them will now benefit from this support. Cornwall Council is also planning to implement automatic enrollment for free school meals starting in September 2026, benefiting an additional 1,800 children.

Eligibility for free school meals depends on various factors, including the region you live in, your child’s age, and household benefit claims. In England, children in reception class, year 1, and year 2 receive free school meals. Beyond that, eligibility is based on specific benefits, such as Universal Credit. However, the income threshold requirement for Universal Credit claimants to qualify for free school meals is expected to be removed starting in the 2026/27 academic year, ensuring all children from families claiming Universal Credit receive this support regardless of income.

Further guidance from the Department for Education is anticipated before September 2026. In London, primary school children receive free school meals up to age 11. In Scotland, free school meals are provided to children from primary one to primary five, while in Wales, all primary school students are eligible for free school meals. In Northern Ireland, parents must apply for free school meals if they are claiming benefits, as they are not automatically given. Children attending private schools do not typically receive free school meals.

For those who do not automatically qualify for free school meals based on the mentioned criteria, there may be an option to apply if certain benefits are claimed until the child reaches age 18. Other forms of assistance, such as grants for school uniform and trips, may also be available to those receiving free school meals.
