Multiple websites and applications are currently experiencing outages due to a widespread disruption in Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS, a critical infrastructure provider for numerous digital platforms, is encountering technical difficulties, leading to service disruptions across various online services.
Impacted platforms include popular services like Snapchat, Slack, Ring, Signal, Virgin Media, BT, EE, Sky, as well as the online platforms of major UK banks such as Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, and the HMRC website. AWS has acknowledged the issue and reported progress in resolving the disruptions, stating, “We continue to witness recovery across most affected AWS Services, including global services reliant on US-EAST-1, which have also been restored. Efforts are ongoing for complete resolution, with updates to follow.”
An earlier update indicated a potential root cause for the error rates in DynamoDB APIs within the US-EAST-1 Region, related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint. This issue is affecting various AWS Services in the same region, potentially impacting global services or features dependent on US-EAST-1 endpoints like IAM updates and DynamoDB Global tables.
Downdetector recorded a significant increase in reports on Monday morning, with over 2,681 reports related to AWS. In response to the disruptions, an HMRC spokesperson confirmed awareness of customer access problems and highlighted collaborative efforts with AWS to address the issue. Similarly, a spokesperson from Lloyds Bank acknowledged service disruptions caused by AWS issues and urged patience while working towards restoring all services promptly.
