Amazon’s Alexa now offers a fun way to learn how to use typical Irish phrases to dodge topics and maintain a cheerful demeanor, thanks to a collaboration with Irish comedian Aisling Bea. The voice assistant has been equipped with 20 iconic Irish expressions, including popular phrases like “what’s the craic” and “ah sure, it’ll be grand,” as well as the Irish term “sláinte” meaning “cheers.”
Research revealed that while 80% of Irish individuals use local expressions daily, 63% often face challenges in having these phrases understood outside of Ireland. To address this issue, Aisling Bea has been actively involved in teaching Alexa the top 20 Irish expressions, set against the backdrop of Dingle, County Kerry, in a new film project.
Aisling expressed her joy in helping Alexa understand phrases like “the craic” and emphasized the importance of bringing authenticity to the voice assistant. Meryem Tom, Alexa Director for the UK and Ireland, highlighted the significance of Irish sayings in showcasing the country’s culture worldwide. Alexa can now respond with various Irish expressions, fostering a deeper connection with users.
As an Irish expatriate who has experienced misunderstandings due to cultural nuances, the initiative to incorporate Irish expressions into Alexa is seen as a positive step. This development aims to bridge communication gaps and enrich user experiences.
