“AA Warns: Improper Car Light Use May Result in Fines”

Date:

Drivers are being advised to be mindful of their car light usage to avoid potential fines or penalties. The caution comes from automotive specialists at The AA, who have highlighted that using improper lighting could lead to violations of the Highway Code.

High beam headlights, also referred to as main beam or high beam, emit the strongest light on a vehicle, surpassing sidelights or dipped headlights in brightness. These lights are designed to illuminate a broader area of the road ahead, particularly beneficial for enhancing visibility on unlit roads during nighttime.

However, if utilized incorrectly, such as when other vehicles are nearby, these lights can blind other drivers and create hazardous conditions. The key is to switch back to dipped lights when encountering oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead to prevent dazzling other motorists.

According to the Highway Code, it is essential not to use lights in a manner that could cause discomfort or glare to fellow road users. Regularly checking all vehicle lights before driving is strongly recommended by experts to ensure proper functionality. Driving with only one working headlight not only limits visibility but can also lead to potential penalties.

Experts suggest inspecting all car lights at least once every two weeks, including number plate lights and fog lights. Ways to verify functionality include seeking assistance from a companion, assessing reflections in windows, or examining front and rear lights by parking near a wall.

Failure to address faulty lights can result in a Fixed Penalty Notice of approximately £100, escalating up to £1,000 if taken to court, as disclosed by Kwik Fit. Additionally, driving with an illegal blown bulb may lead to three penalty points on your driver’s license.

Regularly maintaining your vehicle to ensure all components are working correctly is crucial to avoid fines and penalties. Share in the comments if you plan to conduct more thorough car checks moving forward.
