“Racing Community Mourns Loss of Rising Star Jockey”

Date:

The racing community is saddened by the passing of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes, who has tragically died at the young age of 19.

In a joint statement released by the Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association on Thursday afternoon, they expressed deep sorrow over the loss of licensed apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes. He passed away at his home near Newmarket this morning.

Tommie was a beloved son and brother, and a valued member of George Boughey’s racing team. His parents, Jeremy and Tonie, have requested privacy during this difficult time.

Despite having ridden at Nottingham the day before, Jakes was scheduled to ride for trainer Ismail Mohammed at Chelmsford later that evening. With 59 wins under his belt since 2023 from 519 appearances, he was considered one of the most promising young talents in the jockey community.

Having started his career following his father’s footsteps into the sport, Jakes achieved his first victory as an apprentice aboard Suzi’s Connoisseur, trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, at Lingfield in March of the same year.

Known for his talent and horsemanship, Jakes had a successful partnership with trainers like Linda Perratt and Alice Haynes. The British Horseracing Authority’s acting chief executive, Brant Dunshea, expressed devastation at the news, highlighting Jakes’ promising future and the impact he had made in the racing world.

The support services of the sport and the BHA are extending care and assistance to those close to Tommie during this challenging time. Tributes in memory of Jakes will be observed at Chelmsford and Southwell races later that day and at various racecourses the following day.

A statement on Boughey’s social media conveyed the team’s profound sadness over the loss of Tommie Jakes, emphasizing his talent and character. The IJF and PJA shared that support services are available through the jockey’s helpline, Racing Welfare, and Samaritans for those affected.
