Drivers are being advised to carry nine essential items in their vehicles as amber warnings for snow and ice are in effect across various regions in the UK. The Met Office has issued alerts predicting significant snowfall in parts of the country, particularly in North York Moors and parts of the Yorkshire Wolds. Additionally, yellow weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued for northeast England, northern Scotland, and coastal Wales, with hazardous icy conditions expected in Kent and Cornwall.
A rare weather phenomenon called ‘thundersnow’ is anticipated, characterized by heavy snow accompanied by thunderstorm conditions, resulting in brighter lightning. The Met Office has provided guidance on preparing for cold and snowy conditions, emphasizing the importance of packing essential items in the car in case of being stranded or encountering breakdowns.
Temperatures plummeted to -6C overnight as winter arrived early in the UK due to a cold Arctic air mass. Snow has already fallen in some areas, with reports of road accidents in North Yorkshire. The Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, Neil Armstrong, stated that wintry conditions, including snow and ice, are expected in the coming days, with the coldest conditions projected for Wednesday and Thursday.
Areas exposed to northerly winds, such as Northern Ireland, southwest Wales, southwest England, northeast England, East Anglia, and northern Scotland, are likely to experience wintry showers. Accumulations of 2-5 cm of snow are possible in frequent shower areas, with higher ground in Scotland potentially seeing 15-20 cm of snow accumulation. Hazardous ice conditions are expected even in areas without snowfall, leading to challenging travel conditions.
