Snowfall was observed in London this morning, with reports of snow in Queen’s Park, North West London, and Northholt. Piers Morgan shared footage of snowfall in West London as well. The Met Office issued weather warnings for snow and ice across the country, including an amber alert for parts of Yorkshire and the North East where up to 25cm (10 inches) of snow could accumulate. Temperatures could plummet to as low as -11C in parts of Scotland overnight on Thursday, leading to potential disruptions on roads nationwide.
Neil Armstrong, the Met Office Chief Forecaster, stated that cold Arctic air is dominating the UK’s weather, ushering in the first significant cold spell of the season and hinting at winter weather ahead. Wintry showers are expected in various exposed areas due to the brisk northerly wind, especially in regions like Northern Ireland, southwest Wales, southwest England, northeast England, and northern Scotland. While not all regions will experience snow accumulation, some areas could see 2-5 cm of snow, with higher ground in Scotland possibly receiving 15-20 cm and up to 15-25 cm over the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds.
Weather models indicate widespread snow coverage by tomorrow morning, with heavier snowfall anticipated in Scotland and northern England. Snowfall in the Midlands or southern England is predicted to be less significant. The BBC Weather forecast for today mentions the clearance of rain and hill sleet in the southeast, with sunny intervals expected in many areas but windy conditions with sleet and snow showers in north Scotland, Northern Ireland, southwest and North Sea coasts. Tonight, most of the UK will be dry and clear, except for northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, and western and eastern coasts where wintry showers may persist. Tomorrow is forecasted to remain cold and breezy with sleet and snow showers in specific regions, while other areas will experience dry conditions with sunny spells.
