Christmas and New Year Benefit Payment Changes Ahead

Date:

Thousands of individuals set to receive benefits such as Universal Credit will experience changes to their payment schedules next month due to the upcoming Christmas and New Year bank holidays.

With Christmas Day falling on a Thursday and Boxing Day on a Friday this year, benefit payments scheduled for those days will likely be issued on Wednesday, December 24 instead. As benefits are not disbursed on bank holidays, New Year’s Day being a Thursday means payments due on that day should arrive on Wednesday, December 31.

While the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has not officially confirmed the Christmas and New Year benefit payment timetable, this adjusted schedule has been commonly followed in previous years.

Receiving payments earlier means managing funds for a longer period until the next payment arrives, so it is crucial to budget wisely during this extended period.

The frequency of benefit payments varies depending on the type of benefit claimed. For instance, Universal Credit is paid on a consistent monthly date, while Tax Credits are typically disbursed every four weeks or weekly. Child Benefit, on the other hand, is usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.

In case of any delays or discrepancies in benefit payments, it is essential to verify the date on the award notice and check the bank account details. If the payment remains missing, contacting the relevant helpline is advised, although services may be limited on bank holidays.
