“Arctic Blast Triggers Health Concerns in UK”

Date:

A blast of Arctic air is moving across the UK, bringing temperatures as low as -10C and prompting concerns from health authorities about potential increases in heart attacks and strokes.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber cold weather alert for specific regions in England, including Yorkshire and Humber, the North West, and the North East, while the rest of England is under a yellow alert.

These alerts came into effect on Monday and will remain in place until Saturday. The UKHSA cautioned that the temperature drop could strain health services, especially affecting individuals aged 65 and older, those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, and people experiencing homelessness.

Dr. Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of checking on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbors during this prolonged cold period.

The Met Office has issued snow and ice warnings across the UK as frigid temperatures are expected due to a cold northerly flow from the Arctic.

Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree warned that the coldest part of the week will be from Wednesday to Friday, with potential impactful weather conditions and sub-zero temperatures, exacerbated by strong northerly winds.

The Met Office highlighted the increased risks associated with such cold weather, including pneumonia, arthritis exacerbation, and cardiovascular issues.

Authorities recommended that individuals susceptible to the cold maintain a regular diet with at least one hot meal daily, consume hot drinks, keep homes warm, stay active indoors, and wear multiple layers of light clothing when going outside.

Staying physically active is crucial as it can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and depression, while also lowering the risk of falls.
