“UK Households Overspending on Energy Bills, Expert Warns”

Date:

As autumn approaches, temperatures are dropping, prompting many to switch on their heating systems after months of dormancy. An expert warns that UK households are overspending on energy bills due to a common mistake. Ryan Willdig, from Heatforce, offers five practical tips to save money while maintaining a warm home as the weather cools down, emphasizing a critical error.

According to Willdig, increasing the thermostat in cold weather does not hasten heating but rather squanders energy and money. Each degree above 19-20 degrees Celsius can inflate annual heating expenses by up to 10%. He also dispels myths about leaving the heating on low continuously versus using it only as needed for efficiency.

To optimize heating efficiency, Willdig advises keeping radiators off in unused rooms with closed doors to prevent heat loss. Placing obstacles like furniture or curtains in front of radiators hinders heat circulation, leading to higher bills and strained systems. He stresses the importance of maintaining clear airflow around radiators for effective heat distribution.

Regular boiler servicing is crucial to prevent efficiency reduction and potential malfunctions. Timely servicing, ideally scheduled in September, can avert breakdowns during peak winter demand. Improving insulation in poorly insulated areas like lofts, walls, and windows can prevent heat loss. Simple solutions like draught excluders and radiator reflectors offer cost-effective long-term savings and can be easily implemented in a short time.

By addressing these energy-saving tips, homeowners can enhance comfort, reduce energy wastage, and lower monthly heating expenses.
