UK Braces for Siberian Cold Spell: Met Office Issues Snow and Ice Alerts

Date:

A fresh weather alert for snow and ice has been issued by the Met Office as the nation braces for a Siberian cold spell. Britons are set to endure plummeting temperatures and snowstorms with multiple yellow weather warnings in effect due to the sudden onset of cold weather. The upcoming week’s forecast indicates significantly colder conditions with severe frost expected later in the week, as per the Met Office. Meteorologist Alex Burkill noted that cold air originating from Siberia is making its way across the Arctic to reach the UK.

Additionally, a snow and ice warning has been issued for northern Scotland, effective from today until Thursday, cautioning about potential disruptions due to frequent snow showers. The warning predicts substantial snow accumulations in certain areas, particularly at higher elevations, and mentions the possibility of gusty winds and lightning strikes accompanying the snow showers, posing extra risks. Moreover, there is a yellow warning in place for icy conditions in parts of Scotland and northern England until midday today, while a separate snow warning remains in effect in central Scotland until 6 pm.

BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood forecasts that the current cold spell will persist until the weekend, with temperatures expected to rise back into double digits. However, she warns of continuing cold weather throughout the week, both during the day and at night, with frost and potential icy conditions. Today’s weather front moving southwards and eastwards is bringing a mix of rain, sleet, and snow, with showers ongoing in parts of Wales, the South West, and the possibility of snow in northern Scotland at lower levels.
