“Britain Braces for Heavy Snowfall Amid Arctic Plunge”

Date:

Britain is bracing for heavy snowfall this week as temperatures plunge due to an influx of Arctic air.

A widespread cold snap and wintry conditions are expected across the nation. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold weather warning from today until Friday covering several regions including the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East, North West, and Yorkshire and the Humber.

The Met Office has confirmed the likelihood of snow and ice following a period of above-average temperatures, with high pressure set to bring chilly weather nationwide. The key factor driving the colder temperatures is a shift in wind direction.

Britain experienced its coldest night since March as temperatures plunged to minus 7C in Tulloch Bridge in the Highlands. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley from the Met Office stated that a cold northerly flow from the Arctic will dominate the weather this week.

Holley added, “The upcoming weather will bring much colder conditions compared to recent days, with a risk of wintry conditions such as snow and ice, although generally drier. Widespread frosts are expected across the UK, with temperatures dropping as low as -7C in some areas and daytime temperatures remaining in single digits nationally, accompanied by a brisk northerly wind contributing to a significant wind chill.” Snowfall is anticipated in parts of Scotland and the North East on Monday, followed by heavy snow across various UK locations starting from Tuesday, extending from Orkney in the north to Bodmin in Devon in the south.

As winter conditions settle in, the RAC has cautioned drivers to exercise caution on the roads. RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson warned of potential icy and slippery roads due to freezing temperatures, with an expected increase in breakdown volumes by around 10% compared to the usual levels for this time of year, equating to approximately 1,000 additional assistance requests daily. Hazardous conditions may arise from fallen leaves on the road, which can exacerbate skidding risks in icy weather by creating a barrier between tires and the road surface.
