“Charlie Hunnam Stars in Netflix’s ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story'”

Date:

Netflix’s latest sensation, ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story,’ sheds light on the dark history of one of America’s most notorious killers.

Known as The Butcher of Plainfield, Ed Gein, a figure who inspired various fictional monsters, is now being portrayed for the first time in a true crime series.

In this show, Charlie Hunnam takes on the role of Gein, showcasing pivotal moments from the killer’s life, including his unconventional relationship with neighbor Adeline Watkins (played by Suzanna Son).

The series delves into their tumultuous engagement, Adeline’s departure to New York, and her eventual separation from Gein. Shockingly, the show depicts her knowledge of his crimes and how she unwittingly influenced his macabre activities by sharing disturbing images with him.

As the story unfolds, viewers witness Adeline publicly discussing Gein’s murderous tendencies post-capture, culminating in a chilling proposal scene using a ring taken from a corpse.

The portrayal of their relationship has sparked speculation among audiences about its authenticity, with Adeline refuting any romantic involvement with Gein. She asserts that they only met in 1954, well into Gein’s disturbing behavior.

Showrunner Ian Brennan defends the series’ depiction of their relationship, highlighting Adeline’s conflicting statements about their alleged romance over the years.

In an interview from November 1957, Watkins claimed a decades-long bond with Gein, describing him as a caring individual. Even her mother vouched for Gein’s courteous behavior during their outings, emphasizing his preference for non-alcoholic beverages.

Despite their outings revolving around movies and local taverns, Gein’s aversion to alcohol was evident, with Adeline recalling his inclination towards milkshakes.

Watkins admitted to engaging in discussions about crime with Gein but denied any prior knowledge of his own criminal activities. She rejected Gein’s proposal in 1955, attributing her hesitance to personal insecurities rather than any fault in Gein.

In a subsequent interview, she clarified that their relationship was purely platonic, contradicting her earlier claims and disputing her mother’s statements about their closeness.

Gein’s silence on the matter leaves the truth shrouded in mystery, hinting that the full extent of their connection may never be fully unveiled.
