Strictly Come Dancing pro dancer Amy Dowden recently opened up about her thoughts on starting a family with her husband Ben Jones, expressing concerns about her health challenges and how they may impact her future plans.
While Amy is celebrated for her dance prowess on Strictly, it’s her brave fight against cancer that has caught the public’s attention in recent times. Diagnosed with Grade three breast cancer in May 2023 after discovering a lump a month earlier, she underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and fertility treatment due to the therapy-induced early menopause.
Having received the all-clear from breast cancer in February 2024, Amy discussed her experience on the Breast Cancer Uncovered podcast with Dr. Sacha Howell. Dr. Howell explained the impact of anti-oestrogen medication on hormone-fed cancers like Amy’s and shared insights from a recent study suggesting potential changes in breast cancer treatment protocols.
Amy expressed optimism about the evolving treatment landscape, highlighting the possibility of more women with similar backgrounds being able to pursue motherhood post-recovery. Despite her worries about fertility post-treatment at 34, she remains hopeful and mentioned her oncologist’s advice to wait for a cancer-free period before discussing family planning.
Since joining Strictly in 2017, Amy has partnered with various celebrities like JJ Chalmers, Tom Fletcher, and James Bye, experiencing different levels of success. Her notable run to the 2019 grand finale with Karim Zeroual showcased her talent, ultimately finishing as a runner-up to Kelvin Fletcher and Oti Mabuse.
Amy is gearing up for the new season of Strictly with her 2025 dance partner, Thomas Skinner, as they aim for the coveted top prize.
