Joey Mawson has been identified as the alleged perpetrator accused of sexually assaulting a nurse who worked for Michael Schumacher during a visit to the Formula 1 legend’s residence. The incident reportedly occurred after a party at Schumacher’s home in Gland, Switzerland, where Mawson, a 29-year-old Australian racer, is accused of assaulting the unconscious woman on two separate occasions.
Mawson refutes the accusations, asserting that he and the nurse had a consensual and close relationship. He claims that they had previously shared a kiss at a nightclub in Geneva.
Originally from Sydney, Australia, Mawson was once considered a rising star in Formula 1 before returning to compete in his native country due to a decline in performance. He had a friendship with Mick Schumacher, son of Michael Schumacher, and competed against notable figures in the sport like Lando Norris from McLaren and George Russell from Mercedes.
A trial was set to take place this week, with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the District of La Cote preparing a detailed indictment for the case. Despite being a two-time champion in the Australian S5000 series, Mawson is currently banned from racing due to a doping scandal and failed to appear in court as scheduled.
Although Mawson was absent, the trial commenced but was subsequently adjourned for a later date, as reported by The Sun. It is important to note that the Schumacher family is not implicated in the legal proceedings.
According to the indictment by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Mawson is accused of sexually assaulting the nurse while she was unconscious after consuming vodka cocktails. The nurse, who was a live-in caregiver for Schumacher, reportedly provided constant care for the former racing champion following a serious skiing accident in 2013.
Court documents state that the alleged incident took place on November 23, 2019, when Mawson was at Schumacher’s residence. Reportedly, Mawson was playing pool with other staff members before the nurse joined them after finishing her shift. Subsequently, Mawson is accused of returning to the nurse’s room and assaulting her while she was unconscious. The nurse lodged a criminal complaint over two years later, in January 2022.
