An expert in the industry has shared a cost-free solution for addressing dampness in households. Which?, a non-profit consumer advocate in the UK, is dedicated to assisting Brits in maximizing their savings and resources.
On November 8, Which? took to its TikTok account to introduce a German technique called Stoßlüften, highly recommended for ventilating homes. This method involves opening multiple windows and doors wide for approximately five to 10 minutes several times a day.
The expert explained, “Struggling with a damp house? Here’s a tip from the Germans that won’t cost you a penny. Some methods to combat dampness can be pricey or involve extensive do-it-yourself tasks.
“The Germans have a smart practice that anyone can adopt – shock ventilation. Bundle up, rush around your home, and open all windows wide for five minutes twice daily. Yes, even in the cold weather.
“The warm, humid air inside your home will swiftly be replaced by cold, dry air. Upon sealing up again, the temperature should return to a comfortable level promptly.
“Now, the moisture in the air is expelled, preventing condensation in damp spots on walls and windows.”
Discussion arose among people regarding the effectiveness of this method in the UK, with individuals sharing their personal experiences.
One user mentioned, “My wife does this daily in winter, and we have zero mold in the house.”
Another individual praised, “Great advice, well done!”
A third person added, “I practice this in London, and it works well most of the time. However, it’s less effective when it’s raining outside. I use humidity monitors to monitor the situation.”
Some cautioned that caution is needed when trying this trick due to the UK’s higher humidity levels compared to other regions.
One person remarked, “This won’t work in the UK or Ireland due to the winter humidity. Europeans benefit from a drier cold.”
Another voice added, “No, this won’t work in the UK. The humidity here is much higher.”
