Boxing legend Ricky Hatton was discovered deceased by hanging, as revealed during an inquest today. Hatton, a former world champion in two weight classes, was found lifeless at his residence in Manchester by his long-time friend and manager, Paul Speak, last month. His funeral was held recently, drawing fans who lined the streets before a service at Manchester Cathedral.
During the inquest, Coroner Alison Mutch stated that Hatton was found unresponsive in his bedroom by Mr. Speak, who was supposed to accompany him to Dubai for a press conference about his upcoming comeback fight. Police coroner’s officer Alison Catlow mentioned that Hatton lived alone and was last seen by family members on September 12, appearing well. However, he failed to attend a scheduled event the next day, and Mr. Speak found him unresponsive on September 14.
Although the complete results of the post-mortem examination are pending, the provisional cause of death was determined as hanging. A full inquest is scheduled for March 20. Mr. Speak expressed his belief that Hatton did not intend to take his own life, emphasizing that he had everything to live for.
Hatton, who had previously opened up about his struggles with addiction and suicidal thoughts, was reportedly in a positive state before his passing. His manager recalled the shock of discovering Hatton at his residence and emphasized that he seemed to be in a good place emotionally. In the days leading up to his death, Hatton appeared upbeat, sharing updates on social media and engaging in charitable activities.
Following a private memorial service at the cathedral, a procession made its way to the Etihad Stadium, paying tribute to Hatton’s legacy. The news of Hatton’s demise was met with an outpouring of support from the boxing community and fans worldwide, highlighting his impact both inside and outside the ring. Hatton’s contributions to mental health awareness and charity work were also commended, showcasing his dedication beyond boxing.
Despite facing setbacks in his career, including defeats to boxing greats like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, Hatton’s enduring appeal and down-to-earth personality made him a beloved figure in the sport. His journey from the highs of championship victories to the lows of retirement resonated with many, earning him respect and admiration from peers and fans alike.
