Matthew Coleman, 45, had expressed optimism about the future shortly before carrying out a horrific act. Despite outward appearances of a happy family life with his wife, Abby, and their two children, Kaleo and Roxy, he had descended into a world of debunked conspiracy theories and delusions.
Abby was unaware of her husband’s turmoil as they prepared for a camping trip. However, he suddenly left with the children, prompting Abby to report them missing when they did not return home. Authorities tracked Coleman to Mexico, where he had taken the children.
Tragically, on August 10, Coleman allegedly murdered his children with a spearfishing gun at a ranch. He disposed of evidence and the children’s remains, which were later found by a local ranch hand. Upon his return to California, Coleman was arrested and confessed to the crime, attributing his actions to beliefs in conspiracy theories.
Coleman’s wife, Abby, had also been influenced by the same theories but noted his escalating paranoia. Coleman, deemed unfit for trial, has exhibited self-harming behavior and incoherence while in custody.
