Yesterday morning, Heaton Park Synagogue was subjected to a violent attack during the observance of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Many attendees, observing tradition, were unaware of the incident as they refrained from using their phones.
Extremists harbor animosity towards thriving multicultural communities, a quality abundant in Manchester. The city, known for its resilience and diversity, boasts a rich tapestry of cultures, with a longstanding Jewish community, the third largest Chinatown in Europe, multiple international universities, and a vibrant dining scene on Curry Mile.
Located just 700 meters from the nearest mosque, Heaton Park Synagogue symbolizes the coexistence of different faiths in close proximity within the city. Manchester, with its historical significance and diverse population, has endured various challenges, from past conflicts like Peterloo and IRA incidents to the recent Manchester Arena bombing.
In the wake of the arena attack, poet Tony Walsh delivered a stirring poem titled ‘This is the Place’ to a gathered crowd in St Peter’s Square, emphasizing unity and strength in the face of adversity. Recent times have seen a rise in extremism and division fueled by social media algorithms, leading to increased anti-Jewish sentiments and unwarranted blame on Jewish individuals.
