Keir Starmer has announced the end of what he calls refugees’ “golden ticket,” following the tragic deaths of a child and two women attempting to reach the UK shores.
This decision entails eliminating the opportunity for individuals who have lost their homes to establish a stable life with their families. The existing refugee protection systems are deemed ineffective, leaving individuals at the mercy of harsh conditions such as cold waters and busy shipping routes.
These policy changes will cut off the small glimmer of hope at the end of the otherwise dark tunnel that refugees are confronted with. Ceasing family reunification could result in more tragedies in the English Channel. A majority (56%) of those reuniting with refugee families are children, and 37% are women, underscoring the potential devastating impact of closing this safe passage.
Furthermore, the removal of settlement options may lead to individuals living in limbo, uncertain of their future until they have met certain criteria. These are the very individuals the government claims to be safeguarding – genuine refugees who have fled conflict or persecution and have undergone the arduous process of securing refugee status.
With nearly two decades of experience in the asylum system, it is evident that most individuals desire the simple freedoms of work and family unity. These aspirations provide the motivation to endure years of waiting without the ability to work and support themselves.
Following the attainment of refugee status, individuals are now required to wait ten years instead of five to be eligible for permanent residency. Many refugees also face the prospect of never becoming citizens, leading to a sense of exclusion from society.
These proposed changes introduce additional obstacles to integration within our communities. Refugees have much to offer and represent a resilient population that can enrich our society.
The act of providing sanctuary should not be contingent on what individuals can contribute to society. Offering refuge to Ukrainian migrants was a gesture of humanity rather than a transactional exchange.
Despite the nation’s historical legacy of sheltering those in peril, the current government appears intent on curtailing this tradition, potentially causing irreparable harm not only to the lives of refugees but also to the nation’s identity.
