British and Irish Lions standout Bundee Aki shared a remarkable story of his wife unexpectedly giving birth to their fifth child in their car while he was in Australia for a rugby tour. Aki, who was in Australia for his second Lions tour, recounted how his wife, Kayla, went into labor while en route to the hospital, resulting in the birth of their newest addition on the road just before the First Test in Australia.
Their latest child, named Aine, was born in the back of a car in New Zealand while Aki was away representing the Lions. Despite the unusual circumstances, Aki helped the Lions secure a series victory after a 12-year wait. He revealed that he had not yet met his newborn due to being away from his family for eight weeks during the tour.
Reflecting on the unexpected birth, Aki explained how he received updates from his wife during a team meeting when she informed him that she was on the way to the hospital. Moments later, he received a video call showing his wife and the newborn baby, born en route to the hospital. Both mother and baby were reported to be healthy and strong.
Aki, who typically starts in the centers, came on as a substitute in the First Test, which the Lions won. He expressed his belief in the positive energy of the day, considering the unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of Aine. Aki also mentioned that all his children have names starting with the letter “A,” with Aine being the latest addition to their family.
In the following match against the Wallabies, Aki partnered with Huw Jones in the centers as the Lions narrowly missed out on a clean sweep in Australia. Despite the loss, Aki’s unique family story added an extra layer of significance to his rugby journey.
