“Padel: The Social Sport Taking UK Holiday Destinations by Storm”

Date:

My coach emphasizes the importance of friendship as he hands me a unique racket designed for my introduction to padel. Padel, a sport described as a blend of tennis and squash, is rapidly gaining popularity in the UK and is also making its mark in popular holiday destinations.

Spain leads the way in this emerging sport, which initially took root in Mexico. Portugal is also embracing padel, evident at the Pine Cliffs Luxury Collection Resort in the Algarve. This expansive 72-hectare resort boasts a family-friendly atmosphere with Moorish influences, Portuguese tiles, and a stunning inner courtyard in the main hotel.

The resort offers a range of amenities, including the prestigious Annabel Croft Tennis and Padel Academy, a nine-hole golf course, a modern gym, an award-winning spa, and various activities like yoga and Pilates. The padel facilities have recently expanded, with one of the tennis courts transformed into three padel courts, bringing the total to four. These courts feature glass back walls and metal fencing enclosures, making them ideal for players of all ages.

Padel has seen a surge in popularity globally, with over 25 million active players in 110 countries. In Britain alone, participation has tripled, with more than 400,000 players. Notable figures like Andre Agassi, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Shakira have all been spotted enjoying the sport.

Unlike traditional tennis, padel is played in doubles format, with scoring similar to tennis. The serving technique involves an underarm serve, and players can return the ball either conventionally or off the walls after a bounce. The game’s sociable nature makes it suitable for players of all ages and skill levels, making it an excellent choice for a family holiday.

The resort’s diverse dining options cater to various tastes, with 15 restaurants offering unique settings and culinary experiences. Guests can indulge in a range of dishes, from freshly caught seafood to Japanese delicacies, all served in picturesque surroundings.

In addition to sports activities, guests can enjoy the natural surroundings of the resort, with over 5,000 trees providing a refreshing and tranquil environment. Access to Falesia Beach, known for its golden sands and stunning cliffs, offers opportunities for water sports and family-friendly activities.

Apart from padel, guests can partake in other sports activities such as tennis, golf, and yoga. A visit to the Serenity – The Art of Well Being spa provides relaxation and rejuvenation through various treatments and facilities.

Overall, padel stands out as a highlight of the holiday experience, offering a fun and engaging way to stay active and connect with family and friends. The sport’s accessibility and social nature make it a popular choice for travelers seeking a unique and enjoyable holiday activity.
