A massive sinkhole emerged in front of a luxurious Malibu mansion reportedly owned by Nicolas Cage, resulting in the collapse of the property’s driveway. The incident, which occurred early Tuesday morning, triggered a gas leak that was quickly addressed by authorities and SoCalGas utility personnel.
Measuring between 7.5 to nine meters in depth and 18 meters in width, the sinkhole extended into the street, leading officials to declare a local emergency and order the evacuation of 31 nearby properties. The utility temporarily suspended natural gas services in the affected area as a precaution against coastal erosion.
Despite numerous requests for comment, representatives for Cage remained silent on the matter. Property records indicated that Cage acquired the mansion in 2024 from the previous owner, as reported by The New York Times.
The mansion sustained damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area following the passage of the remnants of Hurricane Marie, which reverted to a tropical storm. While the storm did not make landfall, it brought heavy rainfall and hazardous waves along the Southern California shoreline during the holiday weekend.
The City of Malibu highlighted that the sinkhole incident was part of broader regional coastal challenges, including monitoring erosion along the Pacific Coast Highway and other vulnerable coastal points.
Situated between the ocean and the famous Pacific Coast Highway, the upscale neighborhood where Cage’s mansion is located faced the sinkhole incident. Cage, aged 62, recently appeared in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and is set to portray John Madden in an upcoming biographical film about the NFL personality. With an extensive acting career of over 100 films, Cage clinched an Oscar for his role in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
