Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild caused an upset by defeating the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid 4-3 in a Northern Super League match at McMahon Stadium on Saturday. Kahli Johnson broke the deadlock with a goal in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton doubling the lead 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young narrowed the gap with a goal in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just before the halftime break. Thurton struck again just before the end of the first half to secure her brace and propel the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also found the net for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. The defeat ended Ottawa’s 10-match unbeaten streak. Despite controlling 54% of possession, the Rapid were outshot by the Wild 16-13, with 9 shots on target to Ottawa’s 6.
The Wild earned six out of the 11 corner kicks in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card. In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored twice for the Vancouver Rise, with her second goal coming in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. Jordyn Rhodes had given the Tides the lead with a goal in the 19th minute.
The Rise, in fifth place, dominated possession with 56% and outshot the Tides 18-13, including 6 shots on target to Halifax’s 4. The Tides were awarded four of the six corner kicks, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued during the match.
