A peculiar marvel in the natural world, the narwhal tusk can grow up to three meters in length. This unique upper tooth, protruding through the whale’s lip on the left side, is distinct for its perfectly straight growth without any curves.
An international team of researchers has uncovered the secret behind the tusk’s straight growth, attributing it to the peculiar pattern of opposing spirals it exhibits. The revelation came as a surprise to study author Henrik Birkedal from Aarhus University in Denmark, who highlighted the presence of two opposing spirals — one turning right and the other left.
Recent findings published in the journal Nature Communications delve into the intricate details of how these opposing spirals enable the tusk to maintain its straight form. The research initiative was sparked when Birkedal collaborated with a colleague specializing in organic chemistry, intrigued by the handedness of certain molecules. This led them to investigate the uniform leftward spiraling of narwhal tusks observed in Greenland.
Through a collaborative effort involving biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, the team employed advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans to scrutinize the molecular composition of the tusks and spirals. Their discoveries unveiled a complex structure comprising left-handed spirals in the outer layer of cementum and right-handed spirals in the inner dentine layer.
This breakthrough not only unveils the mystery behind the narwhal’s straight tusk but also holds promise for shedding light on the structural principles of other mammalian bones. Martin Nweeia, a narwhal biologist and teeth specialist at Harvard University, commended the research for delving into the enigmatic nature of the narwhal tusk, which he describes as the most extraordinary tooth globally.
While the study initially speculated on the tusk’s function, characterizing it as “speculative,” Nweeia’s independent research has identified the tusk primarily as a sensory organ rather than a tool for defense or feeding. Emphasizing the multifunctionality of teeth, Nweeia lauds the study for its dedication to unraveling the mysteries of narwhals.
Looking forward, Nweeia advocates for future research projects involving narwhals to include off-season studies and collaboration with Indigenous communities. He stresses the importance of incorporating traditional knowledge from Inuit observations to enrich scientific endeavors, underscoring the interdisciplinary nature of comprehensive studies in diverse fields.
