“P.E.I. Oyster Farmers Struggle Amid Deadly Diseases”

Date:

Kaila Richard, an oyster farmer in western P.E.I., reminisces about her late father while working on their farm in Dock River. Together with her husband, they invested heavily in farm upgrades, facing challenges due to two deadly diseases affecting the island’s oyster industry.

The diseases, MSX and dermo, discovered in P.E.I. waters in 2024 and 2025, have devastated oyster stocks, with some farmers experiencing up to 100% mortality rates. Efforts by the provincial and federal governments to support affected farmers include financial aid and the import of disease-resistant oyster seed, although the recovery process may take several years.

Bruce Richard emphasized the urgent need for sustained financial assistance, highlighting the financial strain on farmers. Jeff Noye, an oyster grower and Tyne Valley mayor, expressed concerns about potential corporate takeovers if farmers continue to struggle financially.

Peter Warris of P.E.I. Aquaculture Alliance underscored the importance of income support for growers and urged for ongoing financial aid to help the industry rebound. Bob Macleod, president of PEISA, criticized the government’s buyback program for oyster fishing licenses, calling for a more comprehensive strategy to support affected fishers.

Despite the hardships, Kaila and Bruce remain determined to fight for their business and the legacy of Kaila’s father. The oyster industry on P.E.I. faces uncertain times, with farmers hoping for a brighter future with the help of disease-resistant seed and continued support.
