Poundland has made an announcement today regarding the status of 11 store closures that were initially part of its restructuring plans. The discount retailer had previously confirmed the closure of 68 stores following its acquisition by investment firm Gordon Brothers for a nominal fee. However, Poundland has now revealed that 11 of these closures have been postponed.
Among the affected stores is Poundland’s Irvine Rivergate Centre location, which was scheduled to shut down permanently on September 14. Recent reports indicate that this store has resumed operations. Additionally, planned closures in Brighton (London Road) and Anniesland (Great Western Road) for October have also been delayed.
A closure in Whitby that was imminent has now been called off as Poundland reached an agreement with the landlord of that property. Poundland reiterates its expectation that its store count will eventually decrease to around 650 to 700 as leases expire. At the start of the restructuring process, Poundland had 800 branches.
Despite the hold on some closures, Poundland will still proceed with shutting six stores on September 28 in Glasgow, Havant, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Swanley, and Uttoxeter, as part of the original list of 68 stores slated for closure. Managing Director Barry Williams expressed determination to provide customers with great value and simplify Poundland’s operations.
The company is implementing a new pricing structure of £1, £2, and £3 for grocery items in its UK stores, with the majority priced at £1. Poundland has also updated its website to a browsing-only platform, discontinuing online purchases. The Poundland Perks loyalty app is also being terminated, with existing vouchers usable until January 15, 2026.
