Solo travelers looking to book cruise holidays often encounter single supplements due to cabins on cruise ships typically being designed for at least two people. Riviera Travel has introduced a solution to this issue by launching the world’s first river cruise ship exclusively catering to solo travelers named MS George Eliot, scheduled to embark on European itineraries along the Rhine and Danube in 2027. The eight-day itineraries start from £2,449 per person, with additional 15-day options available.
This initiative follows a notable 66% year-over-year increase in solo river cruise bookings for Riviera Travel. Solo travelers now constitute nearly 13% of all bookings, with a significant portion being repeat guests. A study by the travel company revealed that 64% of solo travelers prefer solo-exclusive trips, valuing the independence of exploring alone while also having the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals.
To commemorate the launch, Riviera Travel is offering a complimentary upgrade from the middle to upper deck on European river cruises departing in 2027 (excluding long-haul trips). Bookings must be made by October 31, 2025, using the code ‘Upgrade 27’. More details can be found on rivieratravel.co.uk. Additionally, Riviera Alba will debut in 2027, marking the brand’s first ship outside of Europe, with voyages along the Mekong River in Southeast Asia.
Furthermore, major cruise lines such as Disney Cruise Line, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises have unveiled plans for new ships in 2027. Updates on ship names and onboard offerings are yet to be announced. For eager travelers, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, and TUI Cruises are preparing to welcome new ships in 2026.
Legend of the Seas, part of Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class ships, will be the third in the series, following Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas. With a passenger capacity of up to 5,628, it will offer European itineraries from cities like Barcelona and Rome. Featuring the largest waterpark at sea, a 40ft-long FlowRider surf simulator, captivating theater shows, and diverse dining options, this mega ship promises a memorable experience for passengers.
