A young traveler resorted to an unconventional sleeping arrangement to save money on accommodation during her trip to Serbia. Ryley Goles, a 23-year-old backpacker, arrived at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport in the early hours of September 3. Opting to skip the expense of a hostel, she decided to rest in the airport rather than splurge on a place to stay, using the saved funds to visit a video game museum in the city.
Facing a lack of available seating in the airport, Ryley’s mother suggested she nap in a bathroom stall, deeming it a secure option due to the lock. Despite the unorthodox choice of sleeping location next to the restroom, Ryley made do by covering herself with clothing to avoid direct contact with the floor until bus services resumed for her onward journey.
After sharing her experience on TikTok, some users criticized Ryley’s decision, describing it as “disgusting” and expressing disbelief at her choice of resting place. Despite being interrupted by another traveler with an upset stomach, Ryley stands by her unconventional sleeping arrangement, although she does not recommend others follow suit.
Reflecting on her experience, Ryley, hailing from Chicago, Illinois, explained that she felt the bathroom stall provided a safe option despite its lack of cleanliness. She improvised by using clothing as a barrier between herself and the floor, ensuring she remained clothed and shielded from direct contact with the ground. While acknowledging the bathroom floor was not the ideal sleeping spot, she felt more secure with a locked door and her belongings nearby.
