The horror film “Obsession” has captured the attention of global audiences, surpassing the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office. This achievement makes it the first original film of the 2020s to reach such a milestone, outperforming Pixar’s “Elemental” and becoming the highest-grossing original movie post-pandemic.
With a production budget of only $750,000, “Obsession” has become the highest-grossing film ever made for less than $1 million. Directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, the film, released on May 15, has seen a consistent increase in weekly grosses since its debut, a feat not seen since “E.T.”
By the end of its theatrical run in the U.S. on August 14, “Obsession” had earned $263.4 million domestically and $238.1 million internationally, totaling over $501.5 million. The film is still set for release in South Korea, according to reports.
Following its success, the film has also set a record as the highest-grossing festival acquisition, with Focus Features acquiring it after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The commercial triumph of “Obsession” has opened doors for its cast members, with lead actors Inde Navarette and Michael Johnston landing roles in major upcoming projects.
The film’s success has paved the way for Barker’s next endeavor, a horror film titled “Anything but Ghosts,” where he will also star alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson.
